The Revolution in Warfare.
LIDDELL HART, B.H

Category:

Place/Publisher/Date:
London Faber and Faber Ltd. 1946..

Description:

First edition; 8vo; original boards and dust jacket. Loosely inserted is a typed letter signed by the author to James Maxton M.P. The letter states that he is sending a personal copy of my new book and hopes it will be of interest to Maxton. He goes onto say that 'It was actually written in 1944 but, as with so many other books at present, its publication was delayed by the shortage of paper, printers and binders. Thus the atomic bomb appeared before it was ready for publication.' Sir Basil Henry Liddell Hart (1895–1970), was a soldier, military historian and military theorist. Following the First World War Liddell Hart foresaw the need for a combined arms force with mobile infantry and artillery, which was similar but not identical to the make-up of the panzer divisions that Heinz Guderian developed in Germany. James Maxton (1885–1946) was a Scottish politician of the far left, and leader of the Independent Labour Party. He was a pacifist who opposed both world wars and one of the leading figures of the Red Clydeside era. On September 3rd 1939 Maxton declared, "Don't let's talk of national honour: what do such phrases mean? The plain fact is that war means the slaughter of millions. If the prime Minister can still maintain the peace he will have saved those lives, he mustn't be rushed." A fascinating copy, presented by one of the great military thinkers of the 20th Century to one who opposed War all his life. Very good head and foot of spine lightly bumped and the dust-jacket is a little browned with minor chips and tears to the extremities.
